Nature walks planned at Five Mile Woods

Posted

Fall is here and Five Mile Woods is inviting Bucks County residents to slow down and take it all in.

The Friends of Five Mile Woods will host a series of nature walks Sunday, Sept. 20, giving visitors of all ages a chance to explore the 300-acre Lower Makefield Township preserve, spot early signs of fall and learn more about the plants and animals that call the woods home.

The walks will run from noon to 3:30 p.m., with participants able to explore the preserve with members of the Friends of Five Mile Woods while taking in the changing landscape.

One of the highlights is the preserve's new 700-foot accessible boardwalk, which offers an easier way to experience the woods. Visitors who venture onto the rest of the trails should be prepared for uneven and potentially muddy terrain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

Five Mile Woods is primarily wooded and sits along a section of the Fall Line, where the Atlantic Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions meet. The preserve gives residents a chance to connect with nature close to home.

Five Mile Woods was highlighted in Lower Makefield's Play for All Plan after residents expressed support for investing in conservation and sustainability. It was also included in the township's ADA Transition Plan, which identified opportunities to improve accessibility throughout the preserve.

The nature walks begin at Woods Headquarters, 1305 Big Oak Road, near the Kohl's shopping center.
