Seeing clearly: Understanding glaucoma before it steals sight

Posted

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight”, and for good reason. It’s one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss in the United States, yet most people don’t know they have it until damage is already done. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than three million Americans are living with the disease, and nearly half are undiagnosed.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually because of elevated pressure inside the eye. Over time, this pressure can cause permanent vision loss, beginning with subtle changes in peripheral (side) vision. Because it develops slowly and painlessly, many people don’t notice symptoms until the disease has advanced.

Older adults are at the highest risk, especially those over 60, individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure, and anyone with a family history of glaucoma. But early detection makes a world of difference. A simple, painless eye exam can measure eye pressure, check the optic nerve, and identify changes long before vision loss occurs.

The good news: glaucoma can be managed effectively with consistent care. Treatments range from medicated eye drops and laser therapy to minimally invasive procedures that help lower pressure and protect sight.

“Glaucoma doesn’t have to mean losing your vision,” says Dr. Stein of Eye Associates of Bucks County. “With early diagnosis and proper management, most patients can maintain healthy vision for life.”

If it’s been more than a year since your last comprehensive eye exam, now is the perfect time to schedule one. Taking that small step today can help preserve your vision and your independence, for years to come.
