Autism is a disorder affecting 1:31 individuals according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its prevalence has increased yearly, significantly increasing the number of affected individuals, and placing it among the more prevalent disabling conditions. Measurably disabling features of this disorder include four major categories which include:
All of these conditions range from mild and moderate to very severe impairment. Speech and Language category includes the ability to understand and use words and sentences, follow directions and express needs appropriately in communication skills.
Sociability category includes being able to interact with age appropriate skills, express individual needs as well as willingness to be around others.
Sensory and Cognitive Awareness category includes awareness of and ability to respond to events, individuals, programs, and explanations in the environment including danger.
Health and Physical Behavior category includes self-help skills, self-destructive behaviors, bathroom issues, agitation, anxiety, verbal and behavioral moderation, obsessive and harmful behaviors.
Believed by many to be caused by vaccinations, the actual neurological effect of the autism condition is a disruption of normal brain cell activity. This can include the brain cells (neurons) not being able to produce the correct balance of brain wave frequencies for normal functioning as well as the disruption of neural pathways between different parts of the brain also responsible for normal functioning.
Neurofeedback is an excellent remediation for autism because it involves recording an EEG and developing a brain map to determine the locations responsible for specific disrupted brainwave activity and connectivity between different brain areas to pinpoint the affected areas. Remediation includes training the affected areas to improve brainwave activity and improve connectivity between different parts of the brain. The result is the remediation of disruptive behaviors and patterns in order to restore normal cognitive and behavioral functioning.
